Bhutan, nestling in the heart of the great Himalaya, has for centuries remained aloof from the rest of the world. Since its doors were cautiously opened in 1974, visitors have been mesmerized: the environment is pristine, the scenery and architecture awesome and the people hospitable and charming.
Thimpu has been the capital of the nation since the early 1950’s. The historical records suggest that the Bhutanese territory was divided into several principalities, until the early seventeenth century. They were unified into the present shape by the country’s first king named Ngawang Namgyal. Since 1907, the hereditary monarchy was established. The ruling, much loved king of Bhutan is Jigme Singe Wangchuk. He has recently drafted constitution declaring Bhutan a democratic nation with constitutional monarchy.
