Bhutan’s currency is Ngultrum which is tied to the Indian rupee. Indian rupees are easily accepted throughout Bhutan. The exchange rates as of April 2008 are:
£1 = 77.5 Ngultrum
$1 = 44.4 Ngultrum
€1 = 52.9 Ngultrum
It is not necessary and also not possible to purchase Ngultrums outside Bhutan. It is recommended that you take majority of your travel money in the form of cash and travelers checks. Dollars, Euros and Sterling are readily exchanged. Credit cards can be used in Thimpu.
