Bhutanese people celebrate various festivals ranging from Bhutanese new year to seasonal festivals like the summer solstice. The most popular and common festival is called Tshechu; originally a religious festival celebrated all over Bhutan usually to mark the end of harvest season. The main highlight of the Tshechu is the performance of the masked dances by the monks. There are many kinds of mask dances involving different moves, masks and costumes and each of them represent special religious significances. The legend mentions that these mask dances appeared in a Buddhist master's vision during the meditation and the moves and steps are therefore strictly followed as he had in the vision.
