Bhutan has the population of one and a half million people with 95 % of the people depending on subsistence agriculture. Majority of the people are Bhotias of Tibetan stock. They follow the Mahayana Buddhism. The other part of the population belongs to the ethnicity of Indian origin that follows the Hindu religion. The valleys of Western and Central Bhutan contains monasteries, temples and fortresses reminding Bhutans’s colorful history and culture. The northern Bhutan located above 35000m and above offer some fascinating trekking and mountaineering routes. Archery is Bhutan’s national sports as well as its unifying feature. Various festivals are held throughout Bhutan during the pre and post monsoon seasons. Masked and costumed monks and laypersons perform ritual and instructional dances during festivals. Bhutanese people are very polite in nature and whenever they meet each other, they begin with exchanges of family wellbeing. However visitors are advised to always ask for permission before taking photographs of local people and the festivals. National dress for men is ‘Go’, a long down tied at the waist and the ‘Kira’ for the women; a large rectangular cloth wound around the body. It is advised not to wear revealing clothes in the villages and towns.
