Culture

The people of Ladakh are predominantly Buddhist and practise ‘Mahayana’ Buddhism along with pre-buddhist animistic faith and Tantric Hinduism. Buddhism was brought to Tibet and Ladakh during 7th century AD. In the 11th century the prominent Buddhist scholar Rinchen Zangpo established 108 monasteries in the region spanning from west Tibet. The Gompas at Lamayuru and Alchi are said to date from that time. The living Buddhist heritage reflects in the peaceful, kind and hospitable people living in villages where ‘Mani’ walls are engraved with the mantra of Buddha of compassion ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ along with stone stupas; embodiment of enlightened mind. The monasteries are perched on steep hillsides or rock faces maintaining a unique landscape. In Western Ladakh, in Drass, Kargil and the Suru valley where the Muslim of Shia faith live, there are mosques and imposing Imambaras in the Islamic style.
