All the world’s cultures have sacred sites. Journeying to these sites to partake in their power and mystery is known as pilgrimage. Pilgrimage is an integral part of any spiritual aspiration. Sacred sites reveal both external manifestations of holiness and internal understanding of ourselves. Great beauty in both cases.
The Himalayas were considered sacred as far back as we have recorded or anecdotal knowledge. In the distant past, sacred sites were considered the abode of gods,
the axis of the universe, the mythical point of connection between the earth and realms beyond. After Buddhist teachings were introduced to Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan beginning in the 5th century, the Himalayas became home to Buddhist practitioners in pursuit of understanding, of insight. They journeyed around and between these high mountains because the other-worldly qualities of the landscape facilitated the mastering of their minds-- transforming themselves and their communities.
In the 17th century, Christian missionaries described the kingdom of Guge in Western Tibet as the land of Shambhala - a hidden valley free from war and suffering. Perhaps it’s till there, waiting. It’s to realms like these we travel.
We believe that compassion is an instinctive and intuitive disposition of all people, often obscured by our conditioned perceptions.
