An introduction to Buddhism

Buddhism: among many of world’s great spiritual traditions
Just as a particular disease in the world can be treated by different methods in medicine, so there are different religions that relieves human beings and others from disease of mind.  Although one might see various imageries, Buddhism is not focused on particular ‘god’. Buddhism is a practical way of life based on reason. Of the mind and body of man, mind is considered superior; both speech and body are subject to it. Sins do not affect the intrinsic nature of mind. The essential mind is naturally pure. Sins are the defects of peripheral or secondary minds. In the quest for enlightenment, these defects are removed one by one from the peripheral minds, and when all defects are removed from them, true perfection, or Buddhahood, is attained. Like our selves, Buddhas were living beings before they attained perfection.

Life of Buddha
Buddha was born and raised in Lumbini (Nepal) in a royal family 2500 years ago. In his early part of life, he noticed instances of suffering which made him realize that human existence was precarious. He renounced his princely life and became an ascetic. From the point of view of ordinary beings, his life was marked by twelve main events: His descent from ‘Tushita’ heaven, his conception, birth, schooling, marriage, renunciation, penance, meditation under Bodhi tree (tree of enlightenment), conquest of Mara(the temper), attainment of Buddhahood, preaching, and departure from Samsara(the round of existence).

After he attained enlightenment, at Bodh Gaya, he preached three different sermons, each at different place in Bihar of India – the first sermon at Vanarasi, on the four noble truths; the second sermon at Girdhakuta, on Sunyata (viodness, the non-existence of ultimate self-nature) addressed to Mahayanists, or the followers of the Great Way, who were men of very high intellect and the third sermon at Vesali, was intended primarily for Mahayanists of a lesser caliber.
