In the past, the region remained as a remote, isolated and mysterious land to the outside world. However, the rich and unique quality of Tibetan culture and religion has lured the interest of the outside world for centuries although very few were allowed to explore the region. Shangri-la; the tale of the magical hidden valley free from war and suffering became popular in the 1980s and until today, the land of Tibet stands synonymous with the legend of Shangri-la. The annexation of the Tibet by China in 1949, followed with sealing off of Tibet from the outside world for decades. Only from 1980’s the first tourists were allowed into Tibet, which was followed with a flood of tourist after the official opening of the country to individual travelers in 1984. Due to the political disturbance at the end of the decade, the Chinese re-imposed restrictions once again. Now, Tibet can be traveled as a member of a recognized group.
